Ancient Olympia: Peace Now

Photographic Installation by Lynn Singer

At 2/20 Gallery September 19th to October 3rd, 2006

NEW YORKAncient Olympia: Peace Now, a photographic installation by Lynn Singer, will be on view at 2/20 Gallery from September 19-October 3, 2006.  The installation uses the first Olympics in 776 BCE, an event that was able to forge a truce between warring city-states, as a metaphor for reconciliation.  SingerÕs installation opens in conjunction with Peace One Day (September 21), which takes place on the United NationsÕ International Day of Peace.  The opening reception is on September 21 from 6:00-8:00 pm.

The installationÕs four, large digital prints of the ancient site of Olympia will be placed around the perimeter of the gallery.  A spiral and a triangle painted on the floor of the gallery connect the images on the walls through sacred geometry. Double images of the Olympic stadium entrance invite viewers inside. An altar to the goddess Athena, placed in the center of the spiral, will remind us of our responsibility to the world.

ÒThe point of this installation is to create an environment where you can feel the possibility of peace,Ó says Singer.  ÒThis installation confirms my commitment to peace through art.  I look forward to joining thousands of people in hundreds of countries around the world for a global peace effort on September 21.Ó www.peaceoneday.org.

Previous exhibitions include: Greek Photos II at the gallery of the Press Office of the Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations in 1999 and Greek Photos I at the 2/20 Gallery in 1998.  Singer has been invited by the Greek-American Union in Athens to do an exhibition in 2008.
